We are often asked what finish is possible for the aluminium extrusions when anodized. The short answer is that it is much easier if designer of the extruded part specify desired finish and manufacturer will try to match it as close as possible.  Speaking colour wise, when anodizing aluminium part almost any colour is possible. In some instances even shades of a colour can be achieved. Most common is Clear Anodizing. Clear anodizing builds a clear anodic layer over the surface of aluminum to protect it, while allowing the natural beauty of the aluminum to shine through. It’s most inexpensive method of...

Plastic fade under the sunlight (UV light) is a common issue in appliances exposed to the elements. It’s been battled for years and chemical additives have been developed to aid this issue. Image to the left represents two injection moulding plastic samples. Bottom blue part was stored away from sunlight, top sample is the same material but was subject to the sunlight for 36 months. Sample contained maximum amount of UV stabiliser. After some experimenting, is was found that two reliable colours can be used for injection moulded parts that exposed to prolonged UV light: Black and Silver. One would think, that black...

Everyone know what the sheet metal spot welding is. Many probably seen welding process in action and know how the spot welding looks and result it deliver. It is a great high speed process to attach two sheets of metal together. The drawback of spotwelding is that it significantly effected welding area. This is a problem in some applications as designers have to hide welding spots via edge bending of stamped metal parts or by covering it. Now how about if could spot weld parts to the sheet metalwork without leaving a marking from the spot welder? How many people wished...

What is prototype? By definition, prototypes are preliminary model of device or a machine, from which other forms are developed or copied. Prototyping is a method used by designers to acquire feedback from users and engineers about future designs. Prototype design and manufacturing in China Depending on the prototype design, different materials and techniques are used to manufacture prototypes. Most common is CNC machining of the actual part or the die (tooling) used to manufacture the prototype. There are two tier manufacturing standard in China in relation to CNC machining. First is your standard mid quality CNC machining that is generally...

Overview: Well established company had a product on the market place that been successfull for over 10 years. Product is well recognised by the brand name and a particular look. The disadvantage to the company is that this product experience issues with toroidal transformer failures well above company’s standards. The technical research indicated that new casing have to be designed to overcome thermal issues (overheating). At the same time, market research indicated that change of the appearance of the machine will have negative impact on sales.  As a part of general research company contacted P&A International for quotes for electrical transformer...

Two fundamentally different methods are currently available for Rapid Prototyping: Layered Manufacturing Technology (additive) and CNC milling (subtractive). In order to create a  prototype using RP, a designer will have to choose one of both methods. This paper gives guidelines for choosing the most appropriate method. Available technologies are described for both methods, and the differences are explained between 'traditional' CNC machining, and CNC machining for RP. After that both methods are compared, and the strengths and weaknesses are presented. These (dis)advantages then lead to finding preferred application areas for both CNC and LMT: most important conclusions are that for styling...

The scale of China’s growth and China’s integration into East Asian production networks is generally seen as a positive element in East Asia’s trade and economic growth, lifting trade and growth throughout the region. One measure of China’s positive impact is its growing importance in regional export markets, as China has outstripped the US and Japan as the major market for most East Asian economies, including Australia. Though it is no less beneficent, the dynamic of East Asian growth was never so simple. As China’s manufacturing has forged ahead, there were bound to be competitive pressures on other producers along production...
