What is prototype?

By definition, prototypes are preliminary model of device or a machine, from which other forms are developed or copied. Prototyping is a method used by designers to acquire feedback from users and engineers about future designs.

Depending on the prototype design, different materials and techniques are used to manufacture prototypes. Most common is CNC machining of the actual part or the die (tooling) used to manufacture the prototype.

There are two tier manufacturing standard in China in relation to CNC machining. First is your standard mid quality CNC machining that is generally used for consumer goods. Parts quality and finish are reasonable, pricing of manufacturing is relatively low.

Second is high end, high quality machining. Mainly privilege of the larger companies that have invested in German and Japanese machinery. Spent time and money training operators overseas or under supervision of expat professionals and manage to keep them. Those can deliver high quality products like Iphone casing, good enough to impress westerner consumers.

Below is an example of the company design prototype of the car. Scaled model was manufactured in China.  It’s produced with high detail and high quality materials finish.
